Did you feel it?
At 10:23 a.m. Friday, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit in New Jersey, and within a few hours, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated 42 million people had felt the earth move under their feet.
Maps showed impacts were felt as far west as Pittsburgh, north to the Canadian border and through the local region. However, the faint shaking in the Bradford area seems to have been only enough to set some desk chairs rolling a bit, or maybe knock down a water bottle.
Some people commenting on social media said it felt like a big truck rumbling by their home or workplace, while others said they didn’t feel a thing.
The Era office had similar reactions. “I didn’t notice anything, but if I did, I’d probably chalk it up to a big truck driving by” was the prevalent opinion, while a few felt chairs move and noted it as being unusual.
Nathan Burgett, McKean County department of emergency services, said he hadn’t heard of any issues, or any complaints. Neither had Katy Pude, superintendent of Bradford Area School District, nor Steve Disney of Bradford City Water Authority/Bradford Sanitary Authority.
The last earthquake felt in Bradford, albeit mildly, was in 2010, when a quake ranging from 5.0 to 5.5 hit near Quebec, Canada.
