SMILE: Early in the morning, before sunrise on April 25, the dark sky will hold a rare sight — a smiley face.
Really.
The planets Venus and Saturn will be visible to the naked eye on the eastern horizon as bright dots, and the waning crescent moon will line up just right — and behold, a celestial smiley face!
It should be visible to anyone with a clear view of the eastern horizon, barring cloud cover of course. It will be most noticeable in the predawn hours.
Sunrise is 6:19 a.m.
April 25, and astrologically minded folk say 5:30 a.m. should be a good time to check it out.
It’s a triple conjunction, with the two planets and moon aligning.
For those with telescopes, Neptune will be visible nearby and Mercury will be low on the horizon.
If that’s not enough to float your celestial dream boat, try this one — the Lyrid meteor shower will be active around the same time, too. Its peak was the 22nd, but it will still be visible for a few days after.
According to NASA, Venus should be visible all month. ‘Earth’s hothouse twin planet has made the shift from an evening object to a morning sight. You’ll notice it rising low in the east before dawn, looking a little higher each morning through the month.’
Mars will be, too.
‘Looking bright and reddish in color, Mars is visible high overhead after dark all month.’
