TAX DAY: It’s tax day, the day by which your taxes are due to the federal government. We’re sure that’s a date adults can remember.
Yet April 15 has more to offer than filling Uncle Sam’s coffers.
The website for National Day Calendar says today is also National Laundry Day OK, so that’s not really a celebration. How about Purple Up! Day?
Wear purple to support military children in all branches of service.
This is the month of the Military Child after all.
It’s also National Titanic Remembrance Day. We’re not talking about the movie, or poor Leo DeCaprio in the water while Kate Winslet is floating on the door — there was room for him, too.
More than 1,500 people died that day of the sinking of the luxury liner in 1912.
The ‘unsinkable’ ship took three years to build, and two hours, 40 minutes to sink after striking the iceberg in the North Atlantic. It took 73 years to find the shipwreck because of technological limitations in deep-sea exploration.
On a brighter note — well, not for pigs — it’s National Glazed Spiral Ham Day. The dish originated in 1952 in the basement of Harry J. Hoenselaar, who patented the spiral slicer and the ham glaze. The patent expired in 1981, and now many companies offer spiral sliced ham.
On a less tasty front, it’s also National Rubber Eraser Day, although we’re sure some folks remember chewing on erasers in school. The eraser was founded or created on April 15,1770 and in 1858, the pencil with the eraser at the end came along.
Odd, but still better than celebrating taxes.
It’s also National Take a Wild Guess Day, but we would caution against combining that with your taxes.
