(TNS) —The Steelers are playing host to three more college prospects on Friday, including one of the top athletes in the 2025 draft.
Texas A&M outside linebacker Shemar Stewart, Kansas State running back DJ Giddens and SMU defensive lineman Jared Harrison-Hunte are on top-30 visits at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
Stewart is one of the top athletes in the draft regardless of position. He had the top broad jump (10 feet, 11 inches) among the edge rushers at this year’s combine. He also had the second-best vertical jump (40 inches) and the third-fastest 40-yard dash time (4.59 seconds).
And he did it all weighing in at 267 pounds. The Steelers view him as an outside linebacker, the first edge rusher to take a top-30 visit this spring, which is an interesting development.
The Steelers have expressed their intentions to sign T.J. Watt to a new contract. He is entering the final year of his deal. Alex Highsmith has three more years remaining on his deal, and top backup Nick Herbig is signed through 2026.
Stewart played both edge and defensive line at Texas A&M, so the Steelers could simply use him as a hybrid player early in his career, aligning him up and down the line at various positions. They have done that with 2021 third-round pick DeMarvin Leal, whose 2024 season was cut short due to a neck injury. He’s also entering the final year of his contract.
The 6-foot-5 Stewart is being projected as a first-round pick by most draft analysts. The knock against him is his lack of sack production. He had just 4 1/2 sacks in his three seasons with the Aggies.
Last season was his first as a full-time starter, and he registered 31 tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and a forced fumble.
Despite the lack of splash plays, NFL teams are intrigued by his athleticism and skill set.
Giddens is the seventh running back to take a visit to the Steelers this spring. Projected as a mid-round pick, he rushed for more than 2,500 yards and scored 17 touchdowns over the past two seasons.
Giddens (6-foot, 212 pounds) was one of the top
Kittrell/AL.com/TNS testers among the running backs at the combine, running a 4.43-second 40-yard dash along with a 39-inch vertical leap and a 10-foot, 10-inch broad jump.
Harrison-Hunte (6-foot-3, 290 pounds) spent his first five college seasons at Miami before transferring to SMU for his final year of eligibility.
In his only season with the Mustangs, he was named first-team All-ACC after collecting 6 1/2 sacks in 14 starts. He started 21 games for the Hurricanes from 2020-23.
He is projected as a midround pick, as well.
Twenty-four of the 30 visits are in the books.
The Steelers can have six more in next week, the final week they are allowed under NFL rules.
