TuckAway Angus is breeding more than just top-tier bulls.
A local breeding operation owned by Dr. David and Susan Godfrey, TuckAway Angus claimed Pennsylvania’s Top Bull in 2024 and returned this year to the Pennsylvania Performance-Tested Bull Sale with still more success.
Susan said TuckAway ‘did very well at the PA Bull Test Sale on Friday.
‘We sold four bulls, but two did very well’ — selling at the top of their lots.
The result of an embryo transfer from FB Genetics in Dumas, Texas, Ares went for $14,500 to a leading genetic firm in California out of Lot 2.
Crouch Congress went for $9,500 from Lot 8 to a buyer in Washington County.
Overall in the 52nd annual sale held March 28 in Centre County, 87 bulls were sold at a total of $544,250 — an average of $6,256 per bull.
The sale is the culmination of a 112-day test program administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture with Penn State University, the Pennsylvania Cattlemen’s Association and state breed associations.
The test aims to identify and promote the use of sires that are genetically superior by measuring specific traits under uniform conditions. Doing so provides producers with information not normally available in on-farm testing, including how genetics affects differences in beef quality and yield.
Farmers appreciate good genetics because it helps them ensure they’re making a good investment in growing their herds.
Russell Redding, Pennsylvania’s secretary of agriculture, said the program ‘illustrates the longstanding commitment of Pennsylvania’s $9.1 billion beef industry to striving to boost productivity and profitability through quality breeding.’
With TuckAway Angus, Godfrey took up selective breeding just 12 years ago. She said 2024’s Top Bull recognition was a ‘bucket list’ item for her to achieve.
