OFF GRID
OFF GRID: Do you ever contemplate just chucking it all and going to live in a tree?
No, we don’t either.
But just in case you’re someone whose mind the thought has crossed, there are better states to consider than Pennsylvania.
That’s according to a study conducted and published by Home Gnome, ranking the best states in which to live off the grid in 2025.
With the wilderness that surrounds us here, it might surprise some to learn that the Keystone State ranked as the sixth worst state to do so.
We bet it’s less of a surprise when you learn that favorable road conditions are one of the metrics.
For those who fantasize about leaving the rigmarole of modern life behind to live peacefully and closer to nature —we’re sharing this for a friend, of course – the top five states are Iowa, Texas, Kentucky, Minnesota and Oklahoma.
‘For those seeking respite, Kentucky is one of the safest states to settle down off the grid,’ the study reads. ‘The Bluegrass State boasts few air and water quality violations, top access to rural health clinics, the second-best access to rural hospitals and a low crime rate.’
In addition to infrastructure and safety, the metrics used included feasibility, affordability and climate. Submetrics such as the state’s share of major roads in poor or mediocre condition and number of water quality violations were also taken into account.
We can think of a few examples of both metrics here in the commonwealth, just off the top of our heads.
‘Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states like Connecticut (No. 48) and New Jersey (No. 49) score at the bottom, alongside Rhode Island in last,’ the study elaborates. ‘Smaller states that have dense rural areas — less ideal for folks seeking solitude.’
