Nittany Lions hold off Bona baseball, 10-5
UNIVERSITY PARK — The St. Bonaventure University baseball team dropped a non-conference contest on the road at Penn State, 10-5, Tuesday evening.
The Nittany Lions (15-4) jumped ahead in the bottom of the first, scoring a pair on a single and then plating a third run on a wild pitch.
Bona was able to cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth inning, plating a pair.
The Bonnies (7-12) scored their first run of the game when Conner Vercollone crossed home on a wild pitch with two outs. Two batters later, Jayce Tharnish smacked an RBI single down the right field line, scoring Ryan Kucy from third and making it a 3-2 game.
Bonnies starter Jaxson Ross settled down after the first, working four innings and striking out four.
Penn State got those two runs right back in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 5-2.
Morgan Little pulled one back for the Bonnies in the top of the sixth, belting a lead off home run to right-center field and cutting the deficit to two.
The hosts were able to extend their lead to four in the bottom half of the six on a two-run single.
Robert Mannino cut the deficit back to three in the top of the seventh, scoring Tharnish on a sacrifice fly to make it 7-4.
Penn State put the game out of reach for good in the eighth with three more runs coming on a single and a fielder’s choice.
Tucker Genovesi scored on an error in the top of the ninth for the Bonnies, but it was not enough to spark a rally as Penn State held on for the victory.
Kade Walker, Gilbert Saunders and Conor Wolf all pitched in relief for the Brown and White.
Morgan Little finished with a pair of hits while Tharnish and Kucy each collected a base hit.
The Bonnies are back in action Friday when they host George Mason in the 2025 home opener. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
