President Carol Shannon welcomed Literary Club members Friday with a March quote and then introduced Literary Club member Martha Madden who shared that we were going to tie one on today with her program on Designer Scarf Tying.
Martha is a Bradford native and a graduate of Mansfield University receiving a degree in speech and theater. She returned to Bradford and taught English and drama for 32 years. After a year of retirement she began working at the Fran Charles Shop. There she was able to pursue another degree in “scarfology.”
Martha shared that there is no wrong way to tie a scarf and scarves are a very easy way to dress up any outfit. Scarves were a really big hit in the 2010 era. Using a variety of colorful scarves she demonstrated various ways to tie them including one that looked like a braided necklace. Members enjoyed watching and attempting to model Martha’s scarf tying and were amazed at how many different ways there are to tie. She also shared fashion tips such as using circle pins, clips and hair ties to help tie the scarves.
Using a large square scarf she and Frannie Runyan demonstrated one that when finished was almost like a silk jacket and was called a cocoon. Small square scarves can be tied on a purse and using scarves on a trip can make your wardrobe seem larger just by using a few pieces. Martha wrapped it up by using a pin hooked on the shoulder with a large square scarf and also shared taking two different colored scarves and twisting them together.
During the business meeting, Secretary Linda Gault read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were approved. A questionnaire about future programs and updating addresses and phone numbers was passed out to members.
President Shannon thanked the Hostess Committee of Ann Esch, Trudy Gulnac, Bonnie Frisina and Mary Lou Detweiler for the tea table treats and the beautiful scarf centerpieces on the tables. Members were reminded that the last meeting for this year will be the Report Day Luncheon at noon March 21 at Togi’s and that Card Day on March 14 has been canceled. The meeting was adjourned.
