UNIVERSITY PARK — For those deciding where to start their garden or orchard, Penn State Extension is offering a webinar, “Living on a Few Acres: Soil Fertility and Garden Layout,” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 13.
This session is designed for beginning producers or homesteaders and for those looking to become more self-sufficient or take the first step in creating a product.
Organizers noted that this event is perfect for anyone who wants to select the best location for their garden or orchard by learning more about assessing soil types, drainage and physical location characteristics.
Presenters will guide attendees through interpreting soil samples, understanding pH and nutrient needs, and planning for optimal growth. Participants can learn the basics of soil fertility management, soil testing, garden location and layout, raised bed designs and avoiding shade or tree interference. The session will wrap up with advice on choosing the right irrigation system to ensure that crops thrive.
Participants must register by 6 p.m. March 13 to receive the link to access the live webinar. For a $5 fee, registrants also receive access to the webinar recording.
