ST. MARYS — Cameron County came to play and made the shots that counted to defeat Johnsonburg 61-53 during the District 9 1A Consolation matchup Friday at Elk County Catholic High School.
Both Cameron County and Johnsonburg will advance in PIAA playoff action. Game details will be announced next week.
Both teams hit the court eager to take home the win. Johnsonburg scored first on a basket from Parker Calla, putting the Rams on the board 2-0. Cameron County’s Ryan Shaffer, who completed a layup and also made a free throw from the resulting follow, to give the Raiders a 3-2 lead. The two teams battled back and forth through the first, with the score tied at 10-10 with 2:20 to go. Cameron County got ahead 14-10 as the first quarter ended.
However, Johnsonburg’s Noah Stauffer went the length of the floor and sank a layup to give Johnsonburg a 15-14 lead. However, Cameron County called a timeout and regrouped to go on a scoring run that gave them a 27-19 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Jude Schreiber sank a basket and a free throw, cutting Cameron County’s lead to 8 points. The Raiders came back with three more points in the quarter, holding a 41-30 lead at the end of the third.
During the fourth quarter, Johnsonburg cut Cameron County’s lead to six on a basket and successful free throw from Schreiber, but Cameron County built on that 47-41 lead to the final score of 61-53 and third-place status in D9 Class 1A.
