Bradford area residents were among tens of thousands across the state without power Sunday, as a result of high winds moving through the region.
According to spokesman Todd Meyers, widespread winds have disrupted service to nearly 90,000 FirstEnergy customers since Saturday evening, including more than 14,000 customers of its subsidiary Penelec.
Sunday’s outage near Bradford, which affected service to nearly 1,200 area Penelec customers, began at about 10 a.m. “when a large tree fell in deep woods on a power line,” Meyers said. The tree broke a pole and took down four spans of wire, he explained. Affected customers included 950 in Bradford Township, four in Bradford City and 225 in Corydon Township.
Most customers, he noted, had their power restored by midafternoon.
“We were able to temporarily feed most customers using nearby power lines. The remaining 130 customers had their lights back on by 5:57 p.m.”
“It took crews some time to find the damage, which is located in a remote, forested area between South Avenue and Corydon Street,” Meyers continued.
The pole was broken in an off-road location off Songbird Road, along the ridgeline. A bulldozer and excavator cleared a path for crews to access the damage with company equipment.
Meyers said the work is a sizable project that requires about a dozen line workers, including a contingent that traveled in from Warren. Six tree trimmers were also on site to remove the tree from the wires.
“The plan (was) to complete the work (Monday) and return our local distribution network to normal configuration,” Meyers stated, “meaning we can stop serving our customers from different lines.”
