SUNRISE: Where’s the best place to watch a winter sunrise in the U.S.?
Rimrock Overlook in Allegheny National Forest made the list from Mixbook, the #1 photo book company, which carried out a survey of 3,123 respondents to identify the best spots across America to witness a winter sunrise or morning colors.
The best place in Pennsylvania was voted to be Big Pocono State Park.
Regarding Rimrock, the survey said, “Overlooking the Allegheny Reservoir, this quiet overlook provides a stunning winter sunrise with snow-draped trees framing the shimmering water below. The solitude of the forest makes for a peaceful and unforgettable morning.”
The best in the nation, according to the survey, is Hatcher Pass in the Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska.
“Voted the number one spot to view a winter sunrise in America, this remote mountain pass provides stunning views of snow-covered peaks and valleys bathed in the soft glow of the winter sunrise. With little light pollution, the colors are incredibly vibrant against the icy landscape.
“The second most popular winter sunrise spot is Pinnacles National Park. The dramatic spires and rugged rock formations of this lesser-visited national park create an unforgettable sunrise backdrop, especially in the winter months.”
Also making the list were Great Island Trail, Wellfleet, Cape Cod, Mass.; Cape Lookout National Seashore, North Carolina; Alabama Hills, Eastern Sierra, California; Sleeping Bear Dunes, Empire Bluffs Trail, Michigan; Lake Martin, Breaux Bridge, Louisiana; Snow Canyon State Park, Utah; Snowy Range Scenic Byway, Lake Marie Overlook, Wyoming; and Sugarloaf Mountain, Maryland.
In Pennsylvania, Loyalsock Canyon Vista at Worlds End State Park made the list as well.
The distance between the points in the list might rule it out as a road trip. From Hatcher Pass to Lake Martin — Alaska to Louisiana — is 4,256 miles via roads, about 70 hours; or from Hatcher Pass to Rimrock, 4,065 miles via roads, about 67 hours.
