MOVIES: This year is the 50th anniversary of some unforgettable films, including one that is so rooted in pop culture that shadow productions take place while the film is shown every year around Halloween.
It’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show, with Tim Curry as Dr. Frank N. Furter, Susan Sarandon as Janet and Barry Bostwick as Brad, to name a few of the cast members.
It’s also the 50th anniversary of Randle’s attempts to avoid a prison sentence for statutory rape by feigning mental illness. He’s put in a mental institution under the care of Nurse Ratched, a controlling and overbearing nurse. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is based on the Ken Kesey novel. Jack Nicholson stars as Randle.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail, too, is turning 50 this year. The film by the British comedy troupe is still quoted often today. King Arthur: “I am your king.” Woman: “Well I didn’t vote for you.” The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch. So many things make the movie excellent.
There’s Disney’s Escape Witch Mountain, John Wayne’s Brannigan, and Rooster Cogburn.
And don’t forget Jaws. It was considered the first summer blockbuster. People lined up outside of theaters to see it, and the movie was the first to make $100 million at the box office. The Stephen Spielberg film starred Richard Dreyfuss and is based on the novel by Peter Benchley. It spawned several sequels and countless ripoffs over the years.
A more family friendly film was Disney’s The Apple Dumpling Gang, starring Don Knotts and Tim Conway, Bill Bixby and Harry Morgan. It was based on a novel by Jack Bickham. It is about a slick gambler named Russell Donovan (Bill Bixby) who is duped into taking care of three orphans who eventually strike gold.
