HARRISBURG (TNS) — Police charged a driver with homicide in connection with a crash in May on Interstate 83 that killed a motorcyclist who was trying to pass his vehicle.
Ray Hacker, 31, of York, was charged with two felonies: homicide by vehicle, and aggravated assault by vehicle as well as five traffic citations after the May 19 morning crash that killed a motorcyclist on his 21st birthday.
The charges were filed Dec. 31. Police said Hacker was arraigned on Wednesday.
An investigation revealed the crash in the northbound lanes near the exit for Fishing Creek stemmed from a road rage incident involving Hacker, the motorcyclist and the driver of a third vehicle, police said.
Hacker collided with the motorcyclist when Hacker merged into the center lane as the motorcyclist attempted to pass him.
The motorcyclist, Issaiha Seiders, of Halifax, was pronounced dead at the scene near mile marker 35.5 in Fairview Township. He had been wearing a helmet before the crash. A passenger who had been riding on his motorcycle was injured in the 11:48 a.m. crash.
Police said the road rage angle elevated the case from a traffic issue into a criminal one.
“The road rage combined with him colliding with the motorcycle and causing the death of the operator is what gives enough probable cause for the homicide by vehicle charge,” said Trooper James Grothey. “There are also witnesses and dash camera footage of the crash and the road rage going on between the vehicles.”
In addition to the felonies, Hacker was cited with summary violations of reckless driving, carless driving, disregarding a traffic lane and not using his turn signal.
Seiders’ obituary said he was a graduate of Dauphin County Technical School and worked at Hillbilly Wizard in Halifax, a company that sells auto parts.
“He appreciated the freedom that the outdoors provided him, whether fishing and hunting or riding his motorcycle,” the obituary said. “Izzy enjoyed working on trucks or anything with an engine and wheels.”
He previously played on a travel soccer team and was active in the Halifax Marching Band.
