AWARENESS: It’s January, which means a whole slew of awareness months are on the calendar, from the very serious to the rather silly.
For example, It’s National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a dedicated time to raise awareness about the global issue of modern slavery and human trafficking. This month serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against these grave violations of human rights and emphasizes the importance of prevention, intervention and support for survivors.
Also marked in January, on the 18th to be exact, is Winnie the Pooh Day, the tubby little cubby all stuffed with fluff. It’s the birthday of author and Pooh creator A.A. Milne.
Back to the serious stuff: It’s National Winter Sports Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month. This month is dedicated to raising awareness about traumatic brain injuries sustained while participating in winter sports.
National Stalking Awareness Month: This month is a call to action to recognize and respond to the crime of stalking.
It’s also National Blood Donor Month, National Radon Action Month, Thyroid Awareness Month, Cervical Health Awareness Month, Glaucoma Awareness Month, National Mentoring Month, National Walk Your Dog Month and National Birth Defects Awareness/Prevention Month.
And don’t forget Dry January, a month-long sobriety challenge that is an annual health campaign encouraging people to abstain from alcohol for the entire month. Many scoff at the thought, but giving up the booze can mean improved sleep, weight loss, lower blood pressure, weight loss, clearer complexion and liver recovery. It’s worth it.
In the U.K., it’s also Veganuary, a month-long challenge to adopt a vegan lifestyle. (We’re betting that comes with telling everyone that you’re vegan for at least that month).
