(TNS) — Your money’s no good in here. Literally.
Some dollar bills aren’t accepted anywhere in the country, no matter where you’re shopping.
According to Diario AS, the Bureau of Engraving, the Secret Service, and the Advanced Counterfeit Deterrence (ACD) Steering Committee are barring retailers, banks, and ATMs across the country from accepting “mutilated” bills.
The same Diario AS explains how “mutilated” bills are classified as any with cuts, damaged edges, or discoloration.
As for why these organizations are doing this, VIBUS News states that it’s all to “enhance the security of the monetary system.”
Money notes how there are some rumors that the $50 bill is going to be retired entirely, as they’re less common. However, those rumors are not true.
“It is U.S. government policy that all designs of Federal Reserve notes remain legal tender, or legally valid for payments, regardless of when they were issued,” reads the U.S. Currency Education Program’s website.
