THIS WEEK: The week between Christmas and New Year’s is known by a few different names, including Romjul, Twixmas and Feral Week.
Twixmas: An informal term for the relaxed period between Christmas and New Year’s
Romjul: A Norwegian holiday that involves spending time with family and friends, reflecting on the past year, and taking long walks.
Feral Week: A term for the languid afternoons after Christmas, when you’ve finished your holiday traditions and are in a more neutral state.
In Germany, the days leading up to New Year’s Eve are called “die Zeit zwischen den Jahren,” which means “the time between the years.”
The Dutch call it Yule Vacation.
While many of us return to work as usual, there are folks who have that week off. What do you plan during Twixmas?
Here’s some ideas: For starters, turn off your phone and be present with everyone who is home for the holidays. Play a board game or a card game. Go through family photos. We find it’s a great time to remember those loved ones who have passed.
Do something special with family members. Go for a walk together. Go ice skating. Look for animal tracks outside. Share meaningful conversations.
Some like to use this time for a vacation. If you live in a snowy area, head to the beach or somewhere you’ve been wanting to go. Look at the hours of operations of places like the Corning Glass Museum, Buffalo AKG Art Museum, The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, N.Y. or the Fisher-Price Toy Town Museum in East Aurora, N.Y. Of course, check the weather before traveling.
Closer to home, check out the Zippo/Case Museum, The Marilyn Horne Museum and the Eldred World War II Museum, all wonderful places to visit.
