The first session of Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy’s Department of Government Efficiency meeting with GOP members of Congress resulted in the decision that “everything is on the table.” Where to start the proposed $2 trillion reduction in federal government spending should be easy:
Presidential Budget: Cut the White House budget by 29%.
Enact a new rule: All presidential expenditures not directly related to the official duties of the president shall be defunded. All personal, self-promoting and partisan activities of the president will no longer be funded by the taxpayers. The president will be personally required to pay for all associated costs including facilities, staff, travel and security.
All presidential appointees will assume their positions with a 29% cut in pay and expense allowance.
Congressional Budget: Enact an immediate 29% cut in all congressional expenditures including member salary and expense allowance. I am certain those desiring these elected positions will find ways to make do.
End all pensions for elected officials. They are no longer available to most Americans. Congress should lead by providing their own retirement planning without burdening the American taxpayer. Congress should not be a career.
What shall we do about the jobs lost by these actions? President-elect Donald Trump has already answered this question: Many employment opportunities will soon be available filling the positions currently held by the million immigrants to be deported.
I am sure that Trump, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and U.S. Sen. John Thune will show America the honor and integrity to volunteer, in a demonstration of their leadership, to be the first to accept the “hardships” that Musk has said we must all face.
