PETS: Studies say 94% of pet owners say their animals make them smile more than once a day.
We can see that. Whether it’s a dog, cat, horse, bird, fish, reptile, arachnid or something else, folks do love their pets.
Here are some facts about two of the most common, cats and dogs. Cats have 32 muscles in each ear — all the better to ignore you with, four rows of whiskers and no collarbone, which is one of the reasons they are so flexible. Cats spend about 30% of their waking hours grooming themselves.
Cats have no sweat glands. Cats purr at the same frequency as an idling diesel engine, about 26 cycles per second.
A cat’s memory can last up to 16 hours, while a dog’s lasts about five minutes. Cats can make more than 100 vocal sounds, while dogs can make about ten.
There are more than 100 cat breeds, while dogs have 360 recognized breeds.
Every dog has a unique nose print, kind of like a person’s fingerprint. And those noses are pretty incredible, with a sense of smell about 10,000 times more powerful than a person’s. Dogs sweat through their foot pads to help them stay cool, and panting also helps.
Dogs’ noses can sense heat and thermal radiation, which is why even a blind dog can hunt.
There are over 75 million pet dogs in the U.S., more than in any other country. A third of all households around the world have a dog.
Dogs can learn more than 100 words and gestures. And dogs have a dominant paw, just like a person can be right- or left-handed.
