DINERS: We’ve had some reminiscing about diners in Bradford after Sally Costik’s story on them.
Reader Charles Cutlip sent us this letter about dining cars:
“As a teenager I ran the dishwasher at the Congress Street Diner. Each night Doris would bring my meal, a free supper, as a bonus. When not working, me and my friends hung out at the diner. It’s where I had my first English muffin, french fries with gravy and liver and onions. Anderson’s Diner on East Main would be packed.
When the bars in New York and Pennsylvania closed, Anderson’s was the place to go. Oh, the good old days.”
We hear you. We’ve seen people reminiscing on going to the record store that used to be at the mall, or to Jean City, a store that sold jeans and denim-made items.
We’re sure a lot of people have memories of the mall at various times throughout their lives, and stores or eateries that used to be there. Woolworth was always a favorite.
We remember, too, the Christian book store that was on Kennedy Street. We went to Sunday school and vacation Bible school, so that book store was like a magical place with stickers, pencils and even the felt-backed story characters for Jonah and the Whale or Daniel and the Lions Den.
Of course, now those things are available from online stores at low prices, but where is the magic? Grabbing a package out of the mail isn’t the same as making that trip into the store itself and remembering the kindness of the clerk, or the smell of the candle on the counter.
Since we’re in the holiday season, we’ll take a moment to make a plug for shopping locally. You’re not only helping out local folks, you’re making memories that websites don’t provide.
