SMETHPORT — Steven Baker, formerly of Westfield and Port Allegany, was convicted of sex crimes against a minor after a jury trial in McKean County Court.
McKean County District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer reported that, in 2023, a teacher called Childline to report a concerning comment a student had made during class. The child had also reported Baker’s actions to her mother, grandmother, two other caretakers and others.
The reports initiated a police investigation by Pennsylvania State Police, who interviewed Baker. After initially denying the allegation, Baker admitted the indecent contact.
During the two-day trial, the jury heard testimony from the victim, her mother, grandmother, teacher, CYS caseworker and two other adult caregivers. Troopers, McKean County Jail officials and Sheriff Dan Woods also testified.
Baker was charged with and convicted of rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, statutory sexual assault, sexual assault, indecent assault and another charge of a sexual nature.
Shaffer requested increased bail and Baker was remanded to jail in lieu of $200,000. He must undergo a sexually violent predator assessment and has been scheduled for sentencing at 1 p.m. Feb. 27.
Shaffer prosecuted the case on behalf of the commonwealth, advising her intent to seek sentencing enhancements that allow for a lengthier sentence than Pennsylvania guidelines provide.
