SMETHPORT — McKean County Historical Society will sponsor a program on “History of Surveying” at Hamlin Memorial Library in Smethport at 7 p.m. on May 12.
Speaker for the evening will be Greg Bell explaining advances in equipment and methods starting with the survey of the NY/PA state line in 1786, surveying in the county in the early 1800s, leading up to the present-day electronic instruments and GPS techniques.
Bell is a retired surveyor living in Eldred having worked in the profession for 45+ years, including early employment at E&M Engineers & Surveyors and Quaker State Oil Refining Corp. in Bradford, before establishing Heritage Surveys in 1986.
The program is free and open to the public.
