The Women’s Literary Club met Nov. 15 at Togi’s for its annual Philanthropy Day luncheon held this year on National Philanthropy Day.
The meeting was called to order by President Carol Shannon, who then welcomed guest speaker Kayla Hayden, executive director of the Bright Alternatives Women’s Center. A prayer followed the welcoming. Following lunch, Philanthropy chair Janet Glover introduced our speaker. Hayden has been with Bright Alternatives located at the head of Main Street in Bradford for almost 2 years. The center also has two New York locations, in Wellsville and Olean. The center’s mission is to educate, equip and empower both women and men clients. They hope clients can learn about themselves, their relationships and their children. To do this, the center provides a support system, classes and material resources such as baby supplies. Currently, the center serves about 100 clients per week in Bradford. They are totally donation based with 65% of funding coming from churches and ministries. Volunteers complete a training program. The Women’s Literary Club collected a generous donation to be given to the center.
The meeting continued with minutes being read and approved. Members were reminded to bring to the next meeting their donations for the YWCA’s Victim Resource Center. A new member, Patti Stromberg, was voted into the club. Shannon extended wishes for a pleasant Thanksgiving and thanked the members and their committees responsible for today’s luncheon.
The next meeting will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at Hill Memorial Church with speaker Tom Frair, who will present “Music Mountain Oil Field.”
