SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Eddie Lampkin Jr. scored 15 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and had five assists to help Syracuse beat Colgate 74-72 on Tuesday night.
Lampkin’s layup ended the scoring with 46 seconds remaining. Colgate missed a 3-pointer and jumper on its last two possessions.
Chris Bell added 14 points and J.J. Starling scored 12 before fouling out for Syracuse (2-0). Elijah Moore and Jyare Davis each added eight points. Davis grabbed nine of the Orange’s 45 rebounds.
Jalen Cox scored 21 points to lead Colgate (1-2). Chandler Baker added 15 points, and Brady Cummins and Parker Jones chipped in 10 apiece.
Baker, Cummins and Cox each hit a 3-pointer during a 16-4 run to pull Colgate to 57-56 with 9:50 remaining. The Orange stretched the lead up to six points twice before Nicolas Louis-Jacques scored five straight points for the Raiders to tie it at 72-all with 1:19 left.
Syracuse trailed for just over a minute early in the first half, and never trailed after Davis’ 3-pointer with 10:23 left in the first half.
It was the 176th meeting in the series that dates to 1901-02, which Syracuse leads 129-47. The Orange broke a two-game losing streak to Colgate last year, winning 79-75.
ST. JOE’S 83, VILLANOVA 76
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Rasheer Fleming’s 19 points helped Saint Joseph’s defeat Villanova 83-76 on Tuesday night.
Fleming also had five rebounds for the Hawks (2-1). Xzayvier Brown scored 18 points and added six rebounds and a career-high 13 assists. Derek Simpson shot 5 for 10 (2 for 4 from 3-point range) and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line to finish with 16 points, while adding six rebounds.
Eric Dixon led the Wildcats (2-2) in scoring, finishing with 24 points and nine rebounds. Jhamir Brickus added 22 points for Villanova. Wooga Poplar had 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Simpson scored 12 points in the first half and Saint Joseph’s went into halftime trailing 37-36. Saint Joseph’s pulled off the victory after a 15-0 second-half run erased a four-point deficit and gave them the lead at 53-42 with 13:50 left in the half. Fleming scored 14 second-half points.
NO. 1 KANSAS 77, MICHIGAN STATE 69
ATLANTA (AP) — Hunter Dickinson scored 28 points and Bill Self became the winningest coach in Kansas history as the No. 1 Jayhawks pulled away from Michigan State for a 77-69 victory in the Champions Classic on Tuesday night.
Spartans forward Jaxon Kohler hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 52 with just under nine minutes remaining. KJ Adams Jr. hit a pair of free throws to put Kansas (3-0) ahead to stay.
Self improved to 591-143 in his 22nd season coaching the Jayhawks, pushing him past Phog Allen’s mark of 590-129 in 36 seasons on the Kansas sideline.
Frankie Fidler led Michigan State (2-1) with 15 points.
The Jayhawks posted their second straight win over one of the nation’s prominent programs, following up a 92-89 win over No. 10 North Carolina.
