Donald Trump is unfit to serve a second term as commander in chief of the Armed Forces. Space doesn’t permit listing all his contemptable remarks aimed at those in uniform, but let me have a go at a few:
Trump was petulant in demeaning the service of John McCain by attempting to minimize his memorial service. He went on to redefine the meaning of “hero” by saying his heroes are those who don’t get captured. Somewhat hard to do when your plane is shot down, lands in a lake in the middle of Hanoi and is surrounded by North Vietnamese soldiers. How oblivious to facts and history.
During a radio interview, Trump joked that his biggest challenge during the Vietnam War was avoiding an STD on the streets of New York. How pathetic.
He elevated the significance of the Presidential Medal of Freedom over the Congressional Medal of Honor. There is no equivalency. It is an insult to the honor of those who received the CMH. How sad.
He referred to service personnel as “suckers and losers”; ordered that wounded personnel not attend any of his functions; and insulted the Khan Gold Star family who lost their son in Iraq. How contemptible.
On a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, Trump asked an aide, “So what’s this all about?” How ignorant and embarrassing.
I’ll close this endless list with this outrageous comment from Trump to his former chief of staff, Gen. John Kelly: “I need the kind of generals that Hitler had.” Mr. Trump, they lost the war! Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, et al, were the winners! They were Americans! How discreditable and insulting to compare them with the Nazis.
I am proud of my 22 years of active duty, eight years in the Fleet Reserve and a combat tour in Vietnam. I hope my fellow veterans who served proudly and honorably, whether for two years or 30 years, will not let this outrageously incompetent shirker tarnish their memories or commitment.
