TALKING: Research claims the average person says 16,000 words a day. On average, people say about 150 words per minute.
On the lower end of the scale, research says some people speak 6,000 words, or for about 20 minutes. That seems really low, but we all know some folks who don’t say much.
At 16,000 words, that’s roughly an hour of speaking time.
And contrary to popular myth, men and women speak about the same number of words, but that can depend on the scenario.
Women are more likely to engage in casual conversation, but men are more likely to dominate a conversation when in a group of six or more, according to a study in Time Magazine.
What about how many words you read in a day?
For the average person, in 30 minutes, you read 7,500 words. Reading for 20 minutes a day can expose you to 1.8 billion words a year.
The average reading speed is 200 words per minute. When reading silently, the average reader can read 238 words per minute. While reading aloud, it’s 183 words per minute.
Research indicates smartphone users read 62,250 words a day.
How many words do you see in a day? Research puts that estimate at 490,000 — the thick, Leo Tolstoy novel War & Peace was 460,000 words.
Science Daily reported a “million word gap” for children whose parents didn’t read to them at home before they entered kindergarten. That’s the estimate for how many words a child would learn if parents read them five books a day.
That plea for “just one more book” at bedtime really makes a difference.
