My husband and I watched a feature on PBS about firefighters, both full-time and volunteer, and it really touched my heart. We seem to take so much for granted these days and I never really realized what firefighters and all first responders go through.
My dad was a volunteer firefighter and I do remember him being called out at all hours and my mom anxiously awaiting his return. Thankfully, he came home safely from each call — I realize this is not always the case. I do know every time the fire siren sounds I immediately begin praying for the firefighters, police officers, EMTs and families involved.
Recently, first responders were challenged with the rescue operations due to Hurricane Helene and the destruction from Hurricane Milton. I can only imagine how difficult this must be and we can do the most important thing, as Franklin Graham said, we can pray for these hurting people to know HOPE that can only come through turning to God AND to know that millions of Americans care deeply about them and they are not alone, that we are reaching out to help as we are able.
Our firefighters, police officers, EMTs, doctors and nurses are our first responders, along with all of the thousands of volunteers who need our prayers for their willingness to go and help however they can. We can’t forget those working tirelessly to restore power, too. So many working together to help those in need.
Also featured in the PBS program were a number of animal rescues the first responders were involved in. Many people might have seen the feature on TV of the state trooper in Florida who rescued a dog chained to a fence while it poured down rain from Hurricane Milton. The poor dog was standing in inches of water, I’m sure so frightened and cold.
I want to say THANK YOU to all of our first responders as well as our medical helicopter and emergency room personnel. May God bless each of you and your families with His love and protection. I found this prayer for first responders:
“Lord God, thank You for the courageous men and women who have chosen such difficult and dangerous jobs — Police, Fire, EMTs and others. Thank You for their sacrifices and service. Thank You for their hard work in training and preparing. Help them to feel the respect and gratitude of their communities.
“Father God, please keep our first responders safe in every situation. Give Your angels charge over them to guard them in all their ways (Psalm 91:1). Show Yourself strong on their behalf and be their refuge and fortress in times of danger. Let Your faithfulness be their shield and rampart. Amen.”
