STATE COLLEGE — Bradford’s Payten Leet is at +6 through the first round of the PIAA Class 3A girls golf championships at Penn State University.
Leet is currently in 19th place, 10 shots off the lead of Mya Morgan of Elizabeth Forward but still within medal contention. She birdied the third hole, had 11 pars, five bogeys and a double bogey.
It was her best competitive round of the year.
“She birdied the par 5 third hole with a great putt,” noted coach Travis Faulkner. “She had two great putting saves on holes four and six. She played excellent on the front. On the back nine she shot a 40. She finished the last eight holes in 2-over par. Her putting was the best she has putted all year. She has a lot of confidence going into day two tomorrow. I was impressed with her play today. She handled the pressure of the state tournament. She is looking forward to tomorrow and will try and move up the leaderboard.”
In Class 2A girls, Oswayo Valley’s Rylee Thompson is in 31st place at +21, with Madison Koshko of St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy in the lead at +1. Karns City’s Chloe Fritch is in a tie for 10th at +7.
In Class 2A boys, Smethport’s Levi Howard is in 61st place at +14. Howard had a pair of birdies on the back nine, where he came in at 41. He shot a 45 on the front nine. Keystone’s Sean Karg is currently the top District 9 golfer, in a tie for 10th at +1.
Ceder Crest’s Dylan Ramsey leads the Class 3A boys competition through one round at -6. Punxsutawney’s Evan Presloid is at +8.
Final round action gets underway at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
