FOR KIDS: Are you looking for something for kids to do on a rainy day? Are you getting ready for a road trip and hoping the kids behave?
We found some recipes to keep the children entertained. Maybe if they make their own snacks beforehand, you’ll hear less begging for a food break!
This first recipe is simple. It’s sort of a trail mix that children can make on their own. Use one cup each of animal crackers, bear-shaped crackers, mini pretzels, salted peanuts, M&Ms and raisins with either a yogurt or chocolate covering. Have the children mix the ingredients together. For a fun serving, have them scoop out some into an ice cream cone.
For kids a bit older, a fun snack cracker recipe includes ⅔ cup canola oil, 1 ½ teaspoons dill weed, one envelope of powdered ranch dressing, and two packages of oyster crackers. In a small bowl, whisk the oil, dill and ranch together. Place the crackers in a large bowl and pour the dressing mix over the crackers, tossing gently to coat. Allow to stand an hour before serving.
Maybe not for a car ride, but this snack sounds promising — frozen banana cereal pops. It includes ¾ strawberry yogurt, 2 cups of Fruity Pebbles cereal, 4 medium bananas peeled and cut crosswise in half, and eight wooden popsicle sticks.
Place yogurt and cereal in separate shallow bowls. Insert sticks through the banana. Dip the banana in yogurt, then roll in cereal to coat. Transfer to a wax-paper lined baking sheet. Freeze until firm, which is about an hour. Store in the freezer in an airtight container.
For a change on that recipe, try vanilla yogurt and Cocoa Pebbles.
