AUSTIN — Jump into fall with a visit to Sinnemahoning State Park. All programs are free to the public.
From 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, a campground movie The Incredible Journey of Butterflies will be held. Learn about the Monarch Butterflies long migration down to Mexico. Meet at the Campground Amphitheater.
From 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, a Monarch watch butterfly tagging will be held. A Monarch butterfly presentation will be followed by a short walk to catch, tag, and release monarch butterflies. Aerial nets will be provided. Wear closed-toe shoes and be prepared to walk through fields. All ages are welcome. Meet at the wildlife center classroom.
From 7:45 to 9 p.m. Saturday, take part in International Observe the Moon Night. Participants are encouraged to bring a chair or a blanket to comfortably view the moon overhead. Meet at the wildlife viewing area.
From 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, a kid’s craft will be available at the wildlife center classroom. Make a Monarch. Learn about butterfly metamorphosis and make a craft.
On Sept. 22, there will be a program on measuring and scoring antlers held from 11 a.m. to noon at the wildlife center. Discover how antlers grow, what conditions make the largest antlers, and how to measure and score elk antlers. This program is great for adults and older children.
From 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 22, a kid’s craft on leaf rubbing will be held at the wildlife center classroom. Learn about fall foliage and make your own leaf rubbing to take home.
On Sept. 27, a campground movie is set from 7 to 7:45 p.m. on Pennsylvania Elk: Celebrating 100 Years. Learn about the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s elk reintroductions in 1913 & 1926 as well as the history of elk management in Pennsylvania. Meet at the campground amphitheater.
From 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 28 will be a Ride the Rail Trail program. Join a park naturalist on a guided ride on the Lowlands Trail. Bring your own bike or check out one of the parks loaner bikes. Fall foliage pontoon floats will be held Sept. 29, with reservations strongly recommended. Tour times are 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The floats are 1 hour and 15 minutes. Join park staff for a relaxing and informative tour of the George B. Stevenson Dam reservoir looking at and learning about fall foliage and our Pennsylvania forests. And save the date of Oct. 12, when the First Fork Festival will be held at the wildlife center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Celebrate the history and culture of the First Fork Sinnemahoning Valley with local authors, artists and artisans showcasing their talents amidst a backdrop of full autumn color. The 2024 line-up will include music from Van Wagner, local history and interactive programs, live demonstrations, local authors, artists, craftspeople, food, and drink vendors. More details will be provided as the date draws nearer.
