DUBOIS — Bradford traveled to DuBois on Friday in a matchup of 1-1 teams and came out on the short end of a 61-7 score.
The game was called with seven minutes to play in the fourth quarter due to impending thunderstorms.
Each team failed to do anything on their first drive. The Owls began their second drive on their own 44-yard line. After senior quarterback Talan Reese led Bradford to the Beavers 14-yard line the drive began to stall. Reese got sacked for a loss of 13 yards, a holding call then negated what would have been a first down run. On 4th and 28 the Owls decided to go for it, and Reese got sacked again to turn the ball over on downs.
DuBois began its offensive onslaught. Junior quarterback Trey Wingard threw to senior Isaiah Korney for a 23-yard touchdown. Korney caught the ball in the middle of the field and Bradford missed about three tackles before Korney ran across the goal-line. The missed extra-point kept the score at 6-0 DuBois.
It only took three plays for the DuBois to score on their next possession. Wingard struck again with a touchdown pass to senior Nathan Kougher from 32 yards out. The extra-point was made this time to make it 13-0 Beavers at the end of the first quarter.
Bradford put another nice drive together the next time they had the ball. The Owls reached the Beavers 13-yard line before turning the ball over on downs to make it two straight red zone trips with no points scored. DuBois started to blow it open on the very next play when senior Carter Wilson took it to the house for an 87-yard touchdown run to make it 20-0.
“It was a really slow start, we can’t do that against a team like DuBois,” Bradford head coach Jeff Puglio said.
After a Bradford three-and-out, DuBois continued to pour it on. In six plays DuBois found the end zone when Wingard connected with Kougher for a 7-yard touchdown pass that extended the lead to 27-0.
The Owls turned the ball over on downs again when Reese got sacked for a loss of 15 yards that put the ball at the Bradford 40-yard line for DuBois. Wingard worked his way down the field and finished the drive with an 11-yard strike caught by senior Carter Vos.
Bradford got a big play on their next drive when Reese connected with junior Logan Kohler for 53 yards to put them in the red zone again. The Owls were able to score on this red zone trip when Reese found a wide-open Tommy Langdon in the end zone to make it 34-7.
DuBois got the ball back with 21 seconds left in the half. The Beavers still looked to extend their lead, Wingard threw his fifth touchdown pass of the half to Korney who rumbled 69 yards for his second receiving touchdown. The first half ended 41-7 DuBois.
DuBois picked up right where they left off at the start of the second half. On the first play after the second half kickoff senior Danny Dixon ran 64 yards for a touchdown. The extra-point made the score 48-7. The Beavers continued their scoring ways on their next drive that started from their own 12-yard line. Three long runs put the ball at the Bradford 23-yard line. Two plays later junior Samson Webb rushed for a 19-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 55-7 going into the 4th quarter.
Yet another touchdown came from DuBois when freshman London Duncan pounded it in from the 1-yard line to make it 61-7. The only thing that stopped the Beavers offense was the ensuing weather. The coaches and officials agreed to end the game with seven minutes remaining because of the upcoming thunderstorms.
The next game for Bradford will be at home against St. Marys on Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m. DuBois will also play next Friday at 7 p.m. when they try to continue their winning ways at Karns City.
“I think we just have to pick up the tempo, I think we don’t play fast enough,” coach Puglio said. “There is a long way to go, and I don’t think we need to panic over one result.”
