MOUNT JEWETT — Three local state parks have educational events planned for the next few weekends.
At Kinzua Bridge State Park, an archery program is set for 10 a.m. Saturday. Participants should meet on the eastern side of the building. Among the topics covered will be necessary safety procedures of shooting a bow, as well as the technical skills necessary to hit a target. The targets and bows will be provided. The program is free and open to the public.
From 2 to 3:30 p.m. will be a view from the valley hike. Join staff for a guided hike down the Kinzua Creek Trail. Connect with the area by hearing stories of the bridge, viewing flora and fauna on the trail and seeing the debris field up close.
Kinzua Creek Trail is a steep 0.4 mile trail; participants should prepare for a more difficult hike, by dressing for the weather and bringing any water they may need. Meet near the observation deck. This event will be postponed in the event of adverse weather conditions.
At Elk State Park on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m., will be an afternoon kayak paddle. Meet DCNR staff at the Instanter Boat Launch at Elk State Park. This is the perfect place to learn the basics of kayaking and water safety before going out for a paddle on the East Branch Clarion River Lake. Hear the history of the area and get the chance to view wildlife around the lake. Participants should be prepared to get wet, and bring along any water, snacks, or sunblock they may need while on the water. Participants must be 12 years of age, and minors must be accompanied by an adult. Kayaks, paddles, and PDFs will be provided free of charge. Spots are limited, so participants must pre-register by contacting the park office at (814)778-5467. This event will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.
On Aug. 31, at Bendigo State Park, a scavenger hunt will begin at noon. Explore the area and learn more about the park during this fun scavenger hunt activity. Join staff near the pool and playground area to receive your first clue, then solve it to find the next clues hidden around the park. This program will be postponed in the event of adverse weather conditions.
