ROAD TRIP: Where do you like to go for a road trip? U.S. Route 6 made a recent list, “Starting in Milford and ending in Erie, this drive across northern Pennsylvania takes about 6 to 7 hours. Route 6 offers cooler temperatures and scenic views of the Endless Mountains and the Allegheny National Forest. Highlights include the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, the Kinzua Bridge State Park, and the charming town of Wellsboro.”
Milford is in Pike County, and is considered the birthplace of the American Conservation Movement.
National Geographic has called Route 6 through Pennsylvania one of the most scenic drives in the United States. Harley-Davidson called it Pennsylvania’s Best Touring Route.
We know it includes the Allegheny National Forest and the Kinzua Bridge State Park — beautiful places that we might take for granted because we see them all the time. Imagine being a first-time visitor. The Pine Creek Gorge — Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon — is a site to behold, and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has done some work at the Leonard Harrison State Park recently, too. Route 6 passes through Wellsboro, with access to numerous state parks and outdoor activities.
And don’t forget about Potter County, with the world-renowned dark skies for viewing the Milky Way. And Susquehanna, Wyoming and Sullivan counties have the Endless Mountains.
And don’t forget about the Pocono Mountains, with indoor water parks, winter skiing, the Dorflinger Glass Museum, Lake Wallenpaupack and the Grey Towers, the Gifford Pinchot House.
At the other end, in Erie County, there’s Presque Isle, the Lake Erie Wine Country, the Erie Zoo and the Tom Ridge Environmental Center.
