Kids bored and out of school? Beat the summer slump by attending a variety of family-friendly activities.
Join staff for a guided hike down the Kinzua Creek Trail at 3 p.m. on Friday. Hear stories of the bridge, view flora and fauna on the trail, and see the debris field up close. Kinzua Creek Trail is a steep 0.4mi trail; participants should prepare for a more difficult hike, dress for the weather and bring any water they may need. This event will be postponed in the event of adverse weather conditions.
Come find a treasure at 11 a.m. on Saturday during Intro to Geocashing. Learn about the amazing sport of geocaching and hunt to find several caches located in the park. Treasure hunters should meet in front of the visitors center. There are GPS units available to borrow for this program on a first come, first served basis. Call the park office to reserve a unit at (814) 778-5467.
Get your questions answered at 10 a.m. on Sunday during the “Ask the Naturalist” program. The park naturalist will be roving around the park to answer questions about nature and history.
There will be a Healthy Hike of General Kane Trail held beginning at noon on June 15. Hiking in this peaceful area of the park can have health benefits. Meet in the overflow parking area and dress for the weather. Please call (814)778-5467 for more information.
Come celebrate Pennsylvania’s state insect, the firefly at 3 p.m. on June 16 during Firefly Frenzy. Stop at the Department of Conservation of Natural Resources’s table near the Skywalk to hear about this interesting bug! Learn what produces that iconic glow, what they use it for and how you can support their populations. You can even learn how to aid scientists by tracking their numbers in your own backyard this summer!
A Butterfly Bonanza will be held at 3 p.m. on June 21. Visitors can stop by DCNR’s pop-up table near the skywalk and learn all about butterflies. Listen to our staff talk about monarch butterflies and their yearly migration patterns; then learn ways to help support their populations and see more of them in your yard. Children will make an easy butterfly craft ring and then use it to play a fun migration-themed game.
An Intro to Archery class will be held at 11 a.m. on June 22. Practice your archery skills in a safe and fun environment! Staff will cover the necessary safety procedures of shooting a bow as well as the technical skills involved in hitting a target. Target and bows provided. This program is free and open to the public. Meet on the eastern side of the building.
Sunday, June 23rd at 1:00pm – Nature’s Engineer – The Beaver! –Stop by the station to check out a beaver pelt, skull and track! Walk out on the “skywalk” to view real beaver work! Meet in the visitor center lobby.
