There was a power outage in the areas of Smethport and Port Allegany at about 11 p.m. Saturday. This was caused by a circuit breaker, designed to protect sensitive substation equipment from damage, that opened in Penelec’s Farmers Valley substation, located between Smethport and Port Allegany.
Crews quickly patrolled the power lines looking for what may have caused the breaker to operate, but were unsuccessful at determining the cause at that time.
The largest outage impacted 1,296 customers who were served by three power lines. They had their power restored within 5 minutes, according to Penelec spokesman Todd Meyers. An additional 577 customers, served by two other lines, had their power restored less than an hour later, at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday.
