HARRISBURG (TNS) — After being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the deadline to get a Real ID in the state of Pa. is starting to inch closer.
After May 7, 2025, Americans will need a Real ID to board domestic flights and to enter military bases or federal buildings that require ID. While a Real ID is not required for driving, voting, or accessing hospitals, it might pose issues across other organizations and activities.
As stated on the Department of Homeland Security’s website, the REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005, and requires states to “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.”
If you do not get a Real ID, you will need to provide an alternate form of identification to board domestic flights after May 7, 2025. Accepted forms of identification include a valid passport or military ID.
Real IDs are already available in PA, but obtaining one has to be done in person. PennDOT notes that they do “not have a process by which customers can pre-scan and upload REAL ID documents from home” so residents must bring in the proper documents to one of its Drivers License Centers.
Pennsylvania residents will need to bring an original copy or certified copy that shows proof of residency, their social security number, identity, and proof of all legal name changes (if applicable).
The cost for a Real ID is $30. A renewal fee is currently $39.50 for a four-year non-commercial drivers license and $42.50 for a photo ID. A Real ID will include all of the remaining time left on your current license or ID card plus an additional four years. This will apply unless you are 65 and older and have a two-year license.
Below is a list of documents that are acceptable for the Real ID application process according to PennDOT:
If you are a lawfully present non-U.S citizen, the following documents are acceptable:
