ALLEGANY, NY — Despite Leading for the majority of the game, the Bradford baseball team witnessed what would have been their first win of the season slip through their hands late, losing to Portville 4-3.
Scores were anything but common through the first half of the game, as the Owls were able to scrape together just two scores through the first four innings. Wyatt Stark doubled in the bottom of the first to bring in Anthony Lama, followed by an Evan Whitmore run on a Portville error in the third. Bradford secured a two-run lead with a fifth-inning Lama double that brought in Adam Ward but the tide quickly changed.
In a four-batter span, the Panthers scored on double, an Owl error and another double that put them in front by one and despite getting two more chances to put themselves back in front, Bradford were shut out for the remainder of the game.
“We just couldn’t keep it together. We had a couple small errors, a couple small mistakes,” said Bradford head coach Eric Haynoski. “The kids fought their butts off and played one heck of a game and lost to a good Portville team.”
Stark led the way for the Owls at the plate, going a team-high 2-for-3 with one RBI. Ward, Lama, Whitmore and Liam Haven all tallied hits in the loss. Starting on the mound, Talan Reese pitched four innings and found eight strikeouts while only allowing three hits.
Bradford next faces Punxsutawney on the road on Wednesday before returning back to their home field to take on Coudersport on Friday.
