DUBOIS — Avery Eckles’ RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning was the walk-off winner as St. Marys softball edged Wellsville, 4-3, to improve to 3-0 on the young season.
Molly Hanslovan started the bottom of the seventh with a walk and went to second on Jianna Gerg’s sacrifice bunt.
Gianna Surra lined out and was followed by Eckles, who delivered the winner.
The dramatics didn’t look like they would be necessary, as St. Marys led 3-0 after six innings, scoring three runs in the fifth.
In the fifth for the Lady Dutch, Hanslovan delivered an RBI single and Surra a 2-run double.
Wellsville rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh, getting on the board on Malenna Dunbar’s sacrifice fly and tying the game on Lindsey Stuck’s two-run homer.
Surra and Eckles had two hits each for St. Marys.
Eckles got the win, firing a complete game and scattering 10 hits and striking out eight without issuing a walk.
Mackenzie Coburn took the loss, allowing three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings on six hits, striking out seven and walking six.
