(TNS) — Some people weren’t as amused as the rest of us when John Cena seemingly appeared naked on the Oscars stage some weeks ago.
But why not at least appreciate a beautiful physique when you see one?
As previously reported, the WWE wrestler-turned-actor seemingly appeared bare at the 2024 Oscars and gave out the award for best costumes, after initially demurring to take part in host Jimmy Kimmel’s skit commemorating the 50th anniversary of a streaker appearing during the awards ceremony.
After a bit of coaxing from Kimmel, the star finally appeared from behind a wall and looked to be in the buff but for Birkenstocks and an oversized envelope used to cover his nether regions.
“Costumes … they are so important,” he told the crowd.
After the announcer called out the nominees for Costume Design, the 46-year-old then appeared on stage covered in a curtain worn like a toga.
But while many found the bit funny (he wasn’t actually naked by the way), three people hated the bit and complained to the FCC, with one of the people titling their complaint, “Indecent Prime Time TV.”
Rolling Stone was able to get a hold of the angry messages via a Freedom of Information Act request.
“There is no reason why a grown man will come to national television like a streaker and molest and abuse all the children who will hear and see this in TV and in the various media the following day,” one irate viewer from Newark, N.J., wrote. “There is need for Cena and the Oscar organizers to be canceled for promoting gratuitous and inappropriate nudity in such horrific levels that they deserve boycott in the first order.”
“What more can I say….other than an undresses [sic] man coming out on stage with only a piece of paper covering his private parts!” another angry viewer, from Bluefield, W.Va., wrote. “Do your job! Get this filth off our TVs!”
The last viewer, who titled his complaint, “Double standards with nudity” might’ve had a point.
“John Cena’s almost-complete nudity during the Oscars on March 12th, 2024, was abhorrent,” the viewer from Brandon, Mississippi, wrote. “If that had been a woman, the world would have ended.”
“It’s not OK and you won’t care,” the viewer added.
During the sketch, Cena said, “The male body is not a joke,” while Kimmel responded, “Mine is.”
