HERSHEY — It was a successful day one at the PIAA Class 2A wrestling championships for Port Allegany’s Carson Neely and Aiden Bliss.
Neely (285) and Bliss (172) both advanced to the quarterfinals at the PIAA wrestling championships.
Neely (42-0) won via a 12-2 major decision over Glendale’s Daniel Williams, while Bliss’ match was much tighter.
Bliss (29-9) trailed Alex Hoffman of Milton 5-1 before rallying for a 5-4 victory.
Neely will square off with Tyrone’s Braden Ewing (a 9-3 winner by decision over Sawyer Robinson of Towanda) in the quarterfinals at 8 a.m. on Friday. Second round consolations also start at 8 a.m. on Friday, with third round consolations at 10:30 a.m.
Bliss will square off with Faith Christian Academy’s Adam Waters (a 17-1 winner by tech fall over Charles Perkins of Valley.
Kane’s Reese Bechakas (160) and St. Marys’ Andrew Wolfanger (172) remain alive in their respective consolation brackets, while Port Allegany’s Miska Young (215) was eliminated.
Bechakas (38-6) had an opening round match in which he pinned Ethan Fetterolf of Penns Valley in 3:25. That set him up with a matchup against Cael Weidemoyer of Faith Christian Academy, where he dropped a 5-0 decision.
Bechakas will meet Braden Vincenzes of Loyalsock in a second round consolation match.
Wolfanger (42-8) dropped a 1-0 decision of Kyle Scott of Tyrone in the opening round, but was able to stay alive with a first round consolation win over Joey Giannetti of Honesdale by decision, 10-7. He will wrestle Belle Vernon’s Elijah Brown in a second round consolation match.
Young, meanwhile, dropped an 8-3 decision to Josh Ryan of Mount Union. In the first round consolation, he dropped a 3-1 sudden victory decision to Colin Whyte of West Greene. Young finished the season with a record of 37-8.
