SHARON — The District 9 championships are in the books, now it’s time to look ahead to the Northwest Class 2A wrestling Northwest Regional.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the PIAA championships.
The Northwest region consists of Districts 9 and 10, with four wrestlers from District 9 and eight from District 10 in each weight class.
Port Allegany has eight wrestlers, including defending Northwest Region champion Carson Neely, at regional. Included in that group is Miska Young, who was fourth at 215 a year ago, while teammate Aiden Bliss narrowly missed a trip to states, finishing fifth at 172.
Kane’s Reese Bechakas, who won his third consecutive D9 title last week, is also looking for a return trip to states, having finished fourth at 152 last season.
St. Marys’ Aiden Beimel (third at 114 in 2023) and Jaden Wehler (fourth at 145 in 2023) are also looking to get back to states.
Other wrestlers like Johnsonburg’s Avery Bittler (fifth at 145 in 2023), St. Marys’ Andrew Wolfanger (sixth at 152 in 2023) and Coudersport’s Gavyn Ayers (sixth at 215 in 2023) are looking to punch their ticket to state after narrowly missing a year ago.
Below are the top four in each weight class, which are the champions and the runners-up from both district tournaments last week. District finish and overall record are both listed in parentheses, with the top four all receiving byes to the quarterfinals.
