CLARION — The District 9 Class 2A wrestling championships begin Friday and continue through Saturday at Clarion University, with a number of local grapplers competing not only for gold, but a berth in the Northwest Region championships.
Among those is Kane’s Reese Bechakas (33-3), who is seeking his third District 9 title. Bechakas will be competing at 160 pounds as the No. 1 seed.
Port Allegany’s Carson Neely, meanwhile, enters as the lone undefeated wrestler. A defending D9 champion, Neely is 35-0 and will be wrestling at 285. His teammate, Miska Young, is the top seed at 215.
Elsewhere, Ridgway’s Michael Coppello is the No. 1 seed at 107, as is St. Marys’ Andrew Wolfanger at 17
Action gets underway at 4 p.m. on Friday and continues at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class move on to regionals.

CLASS 3ABradford’s Jordan Thompson (152 pounds), the District 9 champion, will be competing, as will his teammate, Thomas Langdon (160).
Thompson gets a bye to the quarterfinals, where he will meet the winner of Elias Bradbury of Westinghouse (6-4) and Parker Kearns of Mifflin County (31-6).
Langdon, meanwhile, enters with a record of 11-18 and will face Dante Duncan (17-6) of Obama Academy in the first round.
