POPULAR PUPS: The golden retriever is the most popular dog breed in Pennsylvania, according to new research.
Pet nutrition experts at PetLab analyzed more than 200 American Kennel Club-recognized dog breeds alongside Google search keywords to rank the breeds most searched for in each state during the last year.
Pennsylvania is hardly alone, with 38 states searching for golden retrievers over all others.
In second is the French bulldog, followed by the Bernese mountain dog in third.
Golden retrievers are popular with families because of their kind nature and ease of training. Celebrities such as Ryan Reynolds, Oprah Winfrey, Jimmy Fallon and Nick Jonas all own a golden.
Frenchies are known as friendly, affectionate and comical and are most popular in nine states, including Georgia, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico and Louisiana.
Bernese mountain dogs, known to be hardworking, affectionate and smart, are popular in western mountain states like Montana, Utah and Wyoming.
Coming in fourth were Newfoundlands, with a reputation for being extremely intelligent, calm and loyal as well as fantastic swimmers. Newfies are good companions for children, being patient with a watchful eye.
The fifth most popular dog breed is the Dogo Argentino, an Argentine mastiff-type pup. Not recommended for inexperienced owners, these dogs are nevertheless loyal, loving and tough. They’re popular in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida, among others.
Wondering why some of these breeds are capitalized while others are not? In AP style, which The Era follows, dog breeds are not capitalized unless taken from a proper noun, such as German shepherd.
In the case of the Dogo Argentino, “Dogo” is Spanish for Molosser, which comes from Molossia, a region in southeastern Europe.
