SONG: What do you remember about your high school’s Alma Mater? Is it a core memory, singing it at pep rallies?
We learned that Bradford High’s Alma Mater turns 100 this year, and was written by two English teachers for a contest in the district. Miss Helen M. Murray and Miss Mildred M. Blair had the winning entry from a “large number entered in the contest.”
The lyrics: “’Mid the hills of Pennsylvania
Stands a school we love,
Our devotion is steadfast
As the stars above.
Though we leave our Alma Mater
Life’s great work to find,
Memories of friendship loyal
Linger in our mind.
Bradford High colors — red and black
May they float for aye,
We’ll remember Alma Mater
Through life’s long day.”
The story of the winning entry continued, “It is expected the above Alma Mater song will be adopted immediately by the student body as the official school song. The composition will fill a long-felt want in the school for an appropriate song with which to cheer the athletic squads to victory, and at the same time with its dignity and feeling, reflect the esteem in which the students hold BHS.
“It is probable the Senior class will adopt the composition as the song to be sung on graduation night, in the place of the regular class song, which as yet, has not been drawn up this year.”
