SMETHPORT — Amateur radio: a hobby and a way to provide public service.
If that sounds intriguing, the McKean County Department of Emergency Services (DES) will offer the first step to getting on the air.
On Saturdays from March 2 through 30, DES will present free amateur radio technician licensing classes at the McKean County EMA/911 Building, 17175 Route 6.
Each class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an hour for lunch. Students should bring their own meals. The class will end with a review and a licensing test, offered without charge.
