President Mary Lou Detweiler welcomed members to the WOMEN’S LITERARY CLUB on Friday, and then introduced Melissa Cook who is one of the coordinators of the BRMC Upbeat Program.
Melissa graduated from Otto-Eldred and attended the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford for sports medicine. She began her career at SMART for 17 years, and then transferred to Upbeat in 2019. She enjoys helping others, and is responsible for creating a very pleasant and comfortable, yet fun, wellness environment.
She explained that Upbeat is a combination of cardiac, pulmonary and wellness with a concentration on wellness. To attend Upbeat a person needs to have a note from a physician. An assessment is then given to the individual by either using the treadmill or exercise bike in order to create an individualized personal exercise program which includes use of the exercise machines, and times and limitations on the machines.
Participants can choose their days and times to visit and exercise in a very comfortable atmosphere where it often reminds you of a personal health club where friendships are formed.
Many insurances such as Silver Sneakers help to cover the initial fee of $30 and monthly fee of $30.
Melissa also passed out special handouts and highlighted for women the warning signs of a heart attack or stroke, a guide to lowering blood pressure, and a guide to high cholesterol and heart disease.
President Detweiler thanked Melissa for such an informative program.
During the business meeting the secretary’s minutes were read and accepted.
A thank you note was read from member Ann Esch thanking the members for her special birthday treat.
There were no committee reports, but President Detweiler reported on some upcoming special dates and events.
