TRIP, CONT.: Here’s the second part of a message from a Bradford High class that visited Washington, D.C. in 1924. We daresay they packed more activities into a day than could be packed into a trip today, what with security measures, traffic and the like.
“The great radio broadcasting station at Arlington attracted much attention and radio fans found new fields for their examination. Several Bradford wireless fans secured permission at the Bureau of Standards to visit and examine the Arlington station and no doubt they were repaid for their trip.
Passing Fort McHenry, one of the Defenses of Washington, where we viewed the quaint old historic town.”
Fort McHenry is known as the birthplace of the National Anthem, as Francis Scott Key wrote it during the bombardment of the fort by the British in the War of 1812.
“At Georgetown, we visited many places which were frequented by George Washington while the city of Washington was being built. After leaving this place, we returned to the hotel at about 11:30 o’clock, in which to allow members of the party to attend different churches.
The afternoon was spent in visiting the Art Gallery and the Zoo, the group returning to the hotel early in the afternoon for dinner. Again we had completed a day’s program, deriving much profit from our experiences.”
And the next day: “April 22 — We have just concluded the best trip the party has taken thus far. Early in the morning we visited the Fish Commission, where we found varied kinds of American fish, both fresh and saltwater varieties. All the displays proved most interesting.”
Jack McDowell was the story teller for these letters. We’ll bring more tomorrow.
