(TNS) — The third state in line, nationwide, to legalize “magic mushrooms” could be New Jersey if some state lawmakers can clear the way for a bill to pass.
The bill in question would decriminalize the drug, according to 6ABC and NBC10. It will also allow people to grow and sell products that contain the key chemical found in psychedelic mushrooms, which is called “psilocybin.”
The chemical in the mushroom produces hallucinations but studies have shown it allows cognitive behavioral therapy to work at an even better and faster rate.
When it comes to mental health concerns such as anxiety, PTSD, alcoholism and depression, “magic mushrooms” have been successfully used as a treatment, NBC10 said.
The proposed bill also requires further study into the benefits of “psilocybin.”
If the drug does become legalized, the goal would be for anyone 21 and older to use it to help with health and wellness.
When it comes to sales and production, the state health department would be in charge of overseeing licenses for facilities and labs, NBC10 said.
Multiple cities, including Detroit, Denver and Seattle, have already legalized “magic mushrooms,” 6ABC reported.
