ST. MARYS — The Otto-Eldred girls volleyball team couldn’t pull off another upset.
Two days after knocking off second-seeded Redbank Valley, the No. 10 Lady Terrors hung tight with Elk County Catholic only to fall in three sets in a District 9, Class A quarterfinal match on Thursday.
Leading No. 2 ECC to the 25-14, 25-20, 25-19 sweep was Tori Newton, who notched 10 kills and three aces, plus her 1,000th career kill in the first set.
Carrie Drummond posted 15 kills and 10 digs, Kate Rhinehart 11 kills and eight digs, and Anna Schuessler 26 assists for O-E, which ended its season with a 13-7 record.
“We honestly played really well,” coach Dan Drummond said. “ECC is solid. They are loaded with seniors and defensively they’re tough to score on. They dug out a lot of our scoring chances. Kudos to them. We did not play badly. We played well, but they played better.”
Payton Newton (8 kills, 2 aces), Reagan Bauer (5 kills, 2 aces), Lucy Klawuhn (5 kills, 4 aces), and Kiri Emmert (28 assists) helped key the Lady Crusaders, who host No. 3 Coudersport at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the semifinals.
“I felt the girls played with a lot of composure tonight,” ECC coach Tricia Bauer said. “We served and blocked well. Otto did a nice job digging our attacks and put pressure on our defense but our defense responded well. The girls were really communicating and trusting each other. It was a fun game to watch.”
