Frances Sherman VFW Auxiliary met Wednesday evening in the VFW Post 212’s club rooms. Draping of the Charter was observed for PDP Janice Holmes who left us Sept. 18, 2023.
Regarding membership, Oct. 31 is the deadline to get in on the drawings for dues paid or switch to life membership. The Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essays are due Oct. 31. Judging night to be determined.
Halloween Bingo will be held Oct 27; doors open at 6 p.m., bingo at 7 p.m. Kitchen will be open. Costumes are encouraged, prize for top three. $30 packet with all games included.
A Veterans Day dinner will be held Nov. 11 with the social at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. Sign up for dinner choice of stuffed chicken breast or salisbury steak ASAP.
The Kindness Tree will be hung with tags for nursing homes/shut-in veterans Nov. 1. Gifts are due back by Dec. 20.
Kids Christmas Party will be Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. Sign up sheet for members’ kids/grandkids (10 and under) will be posted. Auxiliary members are asked to donate cookies. Wrapping/stuffing stockings will be done Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. All little elves who like to wrap … come on down!
Members wore some pink to the meeting to honor October Breast Cancer Awareness. Our hero SURVIVOR, Jamie Phillips, gave everyone a treat for rocking the pink!
For the bib project, resident seamstress Katie Kloss will head up this project. Calling in our creative sewers!
Troop 412 is taking orders for popcorn and wreaths. There is an order sheet at the Canteen, ask a barkeep.
On Nov. 25, a meat raffle will be held to support the National Home. A flier will be posted with information.
From Nov. 17 to 19, Department President Mary Jean will make her District 19 official visit. An itinerary has been sent out and those wanting to take part in any part of it need to let Amy know for headcounts, for activities and dinners alike. District 19 meeting will be hosted by 6391 Port Allegany. VFWA meets at 2 p.m. Nov. 19.
RADA orders and money are due to Karla Leone ASAP, if there are any out there yet.

SMETHPORT — The Smethport Area Women’s Club held its monthly meeting Wednesday at the American Legion Hall. There were 14 people present: 13 members and 1 guest, Heather Boswell, who will be joining the club.
President Barb Peterson called the business meeting to order after dinner. The minutes from the Sept. 20 meeting were approved as read. There were no items of correspondence. Treasurer Phyllis Faes reported the balance.
Under old business, Theresa Fitzsimmons is working on the brief history of The Smethport Area Women’s Club. She will report back to us as she progresses.
Meals will continue to cost $15. This includes the tip.
Under new business, the club will not sell Dan Smith Candy this year, but the Mount Jewett Fire Department is selling it.
There were two announcements regarding member health.
The Holiday Craft Fair held at the Smethport Area School in December still needs our help. Anyone willing to work as a volunteer should let Jackie Cooney know.
There was no speaker for this meeting because of a mix-up with the dates. We will try another meeting opportunity in January.
The monthly drawing was won by Carol Duffy.
The meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
Next meeting will be Nov. 29 at the Legion Hall in Smethport. This will be the annual Christmas Party with shrimp cocktail, lasagna and dessert for dinner. Remember to bring paper and soap products for the Food Bank and a $15 exchange gift.
